DIFFERENT MATERIALS USED TO MAKE DENTAL CROWNS
        There are various materials used to make the crown that depends upon the need and preference of the patients. The crown can be temporary and permanent. The temporary crown is made by the dentist in the clinic itself whereas a permanent crown is made in a dental laboratory. The different materials used in making crowns are:

            -  Metals :
Metal crowns are very durable and they can endure the wear and tear of chewing and biting for a long time. They are very strong and rarely chip off. The only disadvantage is the colour and hence, it is mostly placed at the back of the mouth. These however need to be maintained very stringently via meticulous flossing & brushing since food can get stuck to these crowns.
- Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal(PFM) :
This is used when there is a requirement of both strength and aesthetics. This crown has a metal layer underneath the ceramic, tooth coloured layer. The porcelain can be matched to the adjacent tooth and looks aesthetically good.
Both the metal & Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) may need to be removed if a head or neck MRI/CT needs to be done.
- All-Ceramic :
These are modern crowns which combine both aesthetics & strength. They provide natural colour and look exactly like a natural tooth. They have very high strength & are highly polished. Thus, foods get stuck very less to All ceramic crowns & they are easy to clean & maintain.
 All ceramic crowns do not need removal for MRI CT.

        PROCEDURE TO MAKE A CROWN
        The dentists usually deliver the crown in two sittings. In the first appointment, the dentist gives a proper shape to the tooth. The shaping of the tooth depends upon the type of the crown to be placed. A proper shape is very important for long term stability. After giving a proper shape, an impression(measurement) of the tooth is taken which is then sent to the dental laboratory for making. A temporary crown is placed onto your tooth till you can have the final one.
In the second sitting, the crown is placed on the tooth to check the fit. If all is good, it is cemented with the help of cement. Both visits can take upto 1 hour

        WHAT IS THE EXPECTED LIFE OF A CROWN?
        WHAT IS THE EXPECTED LIFE OF A CROWN?
        The crown lasts for an average of 5-7 years but if proper care is taken, it may last more upto 10-12 years. It also depends on the type of crown you have chosen. The patient has to follow some basic advice for a long-lasting crown.
If you have a crown, it's important to take good care of it to help extend its lifespan. This includes practising good oral hygiene habits, avoiding biting and chewing on extremely hard objects, and wearing a night guard if you grind or clench your teeth. Regular dental check-ups can also help detect any problems with the crown early on, so they can be addressed before they cause significant damage.
